SCORRIER HOUSE, REDRUTH

For this journal, I’m looking back at Sarah and Saxon’s wedding at Scorrier House near Redruth, which took place on the 2nd of September 2023. It was a warm, sunny, late summer’s day, full of laughter and fun, which really amped up throughout the day.

Sarah got ready for her big day at her home in Porthleven alongside her bridesmaids, who were all wearing amazing matching Asian-style dressing gowns with peacock designs. We captured the makeup and hair (done by Andrea at Simply Bridal Hair), the beautiful, ornate lace dress (from The Bridal Studio Helston), featuring intricate embroidery, as well as little elements such as jewellery, shoes, and the bouquet by Sweet Pea Floral Studio. The colour scheme was excellent for the day, full of bright summer colours and sunflowers. Sarah looked stunning and relaxed, surrounded by her family and best friends.

Meanwhile, Saxon and his wedding party got ready at the venue, and we photographed them laughing and helping each other with their ties, as well as assisting the four Page Boys with getting dressed in their Moss Bros suits. Saxon gave his Best Man and Groomsmen some small hip flasks with their names on them, which looked great.

We moved around Scorrier House to capture the different areas inside. The main dining area, situated next to the grand central staircase in the house, was adorned with flowers and sunflowers, and the rails were lined with dried hops. The wedding cake, which really stood out (made by Polly Webb Cakes), was placed on a table halfway up the staircase and was decorated with a garland in the shape of a massive arch of sunflowers.

The Bridesmaids were the first to arrive at the venue alongside Sarah and Saxson’s dog, who was wearing a little sunflower collar. We took some photos of them outside while waiting for Sarah. They were all wearing matching blue dresses with sunflower bouquets and looked fantastic.

The ceremony itself was held outside in the green gardens of Scorrier House next to the swimming pool, and whilst the wedding party made their way down the aisle to where Saxon was waiting, wedding pianist Roger Miners serenaded the special moment. He later also played a baby grand piano during the meal for everyone. The ceremony went down very well, and the photos of the couple came out perfectly in the warm sunlight. We snapped the magic “I do” and kiss, the signing of the register, as well as lovely moments with Sarah and Saxon’s little boy.

Now Husband and Wife, we did a confetti tunnel at the front of Scorrier House under the archway with friends and family, which looked great for the photos. Not too much confetti was launched into the couple’s faces, which was good to see! And then it was back to the garden for group shots, which was good fun with each group picking up the Bride and Groom in turn to pose. The Bridesmaids all wanted to do a moving Vogue-style catwalk on the lawn, and the Groomsmen all lit up a cigar, which also made for great photos!

After this, it was time for everybody to enjoy the bouncy castle and lawn games provided by Little Eden Entertainment. It was a real blast from the past, featuring games such as Connect Four, a rope for tug of war, and a giant Jenga. There was also a bungee run, which people played throughout the day and into the evening and was hilarious to watch as a bystander. After racing to plant a Velcro patch as far forward as they can, the bungee cord attached to each racer would pull them backwards, usually taking them off their feet!

Whilst everyone was enjoying drinks and games on the lawn, I took some couple shots with Sarah and Saxon in the beautiful light of the gardens and also inside the orangery conservatory. I did this on 35mm and medium format film as well which turned out great, and after this we got the whole wedding party together for a big group shot before the wedding breakfast and speeches.

The dining room inside the house featured a blue colour scheme, which perfectly matched the napkins and tables with the Bridesmaids’ dresses. Catering was done by Philleigh Way, and the food is absolutely incredible, with some lovely steak and fish dishes. After the speeches and the meal were over, it was time for the rodeo bull. Possibly not what you want to do after a big feed and some wine, but no one turned green! Everyone enjoyed laughing at each rider, so I captured some funny photos during this time of the guys trying to hold on for dear life and failing miserably. Sarah attempted a ride and almost fell off immediately, then I captured some photos of the couple trying to ride together, which was even funnier!

As the light grew lower and the golden sunlight filtered through the trees, we took the couple to the front garden for some more photos, using my 35mm film camera. There were some lovely moments in front of a giant palm tree alongside Sarah and Saxon’s dog.

I then managed to persuade the owners to unlock the gates to the swimming pool for some shots around the water’s edge, but were followed in by a few of the guests. Being a hot day and of course the Groomsmen had warmed up by then, they ended up pushing each other into the pool fully clothed. It really was such a funny moment that no one saw coming!

After this point, it was time to try their best to dry off and go inside for the cutting of the cake and then straight into the first dance, after which there was a really lovely Daddy/Daughter dance with Sarah’s Father. The DJ for the night was Jamie of DJ In Cornwall, who spun the tunes all night long, and things really amped up with the whole party jumping and Groomsmen picking each other up.
